STURGIS, S.D. – In a game that was delayed by an hour and a half due to lightning, the Huron Tigers held off the Sturgis Scoopers 34-32 Friday night.
The Tigers led 21-12 at the half, but the Scoopers came right back and had a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. Down 27-26, the Scoopers’ Owen Cass had a tipped pass get picked off by the Tigers as they were deep in Huron territory attempting to score.
With the ball back, the Tigers’ Quinston Luellman Clark, on third down, swept to the outside and took the ball 89 yards for the score to make it 34 to 26 Huron.
Needing a touchdown and two point conversion to tie, the Scoopers went to work with 1:18 left. The game came down to a wild play for the Scoopers, as Cass picked up a bad snap and shoveled the ball to Tyan Buss for the score with 1.8 seconds left. Sturgis, however, would fail on the 2 point conversion, and the Tigers would recover the ensuing onside kick to ice the game.
Sturgis falls to 2-2 on the season. Huron wins their first game of the year and is 1-3.
