Icy conditions lead to slippery roads Sunday

STURGIS, S.D. – A coating of ice and then snow led to slippery roads around the area Sunday.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol responded to several crashes Sunday due to vehicles sliding off the roads.

Among the incidents were a truck that lost control and wrecked off Highway 34 east of Sturgis and another truck that went off the road near Whitewood on I-90.

There were also reports of cars sliding off the roads on I-90 between the Spearfish and Rapid City.

Due to poor road conditions, the Pennington County Sheriff’s office had a no travel advisory on county roads Sunday nights. In a post, the sheriff’s office says plows had been pulled off the roads, and would not resume road treatment and clearing until Monday morning. The advisory did not include the City of Rapid City.

The ice was the result of freezing drizzle overnight Saturday that eventually changed over to snow during the day Sunday.

There was a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until Midnight Sunday for most of southwestern South Dakota and the Northern Hills.
