Yellow Jackets reclaim Homestake Trophy with 48-28 victory

BHSU Athletics; Media Release - October 13, 2019

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University football team reclaimed the Homestake Trophy in the 134th meeting between the Yellow Jackets and Hardrockers. The Green and Gold (2-4, 2-4 RMAC) defeated South Dakota School of Mines (1-5, 0-5 RMAC), 48-28, on Saturday evening.

After winning the toss and deferring, the Yellow Jackets immediately forced a three-and-out of the Hardrocker offense. The next SDM drive ended the same way, and a short punt gave the Green and Gold the ball at the Hardrocker 38-yardline in their second possession. A healthy dose of Payten Gilmore rushes helped move BHSU down the field. At third-and-goal at the six-yard line, quarterback Chance Eben rushed it himself, helped by a big block by Gilmore, and trucked into the endzone, giving the home team a 7-0 lead.

The Yellow Jacket defense responded with another three-and-out, and the offense took over again. This time, BHSU drove 70 yards down the field, highlighted by two 25-yard receptions, one by Kielar Harpham, and one by Hasaan Williams. With a first down at the one-yard line, Gilmore got the ball and slipped in for the score, putting the Green and Gold up, 14-0, with just over two minutes to play in the first.

On the Hardrockers' next possession, they were finally able to get a first down, and entered Yellow Jacket territory. However, the defense got a third-down stop at the BHSU 28-yard line, forcing a field goal try, which was wide left, preserving the 14-0 lead.

With 8:34 to play in the first half, the Yellow Jackets once again got good field position, starting at the 50-yard line. Eben hooked up with Jarett Jenson for a 27-yard score to put the home squad up, 21-0.

Just under three minutes before the half, South Dakota Mines got on the board, taking advantage of an interception as Will Carroll ran it back 36 yards for a score. The teams would enter the break with BHSU holding a 21-7 lead.

The Yellow Jackets got the ball first in the second half, and kept their momentum going. The team marched 75 yards down the field in 15 plays and almost six minutes. Gilmore would get his second score of the day, this time a 9-yard reception. On the Hardrocker's next possession, the Green and Gold defense stepped up again. Korby Campbell forced a fumble which Devyn Vance picked up and rumbled 42 yards into the endzone to put BHSU up, 34-7.

SDM would score with 4:38 to play in the third, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 7:40, 18 play, 75-yard drive, culminating in a Gilmore two-yard rush, putting BHSU up, 41-14. The Hardrockers came down the field and scored quickly, before forcing a Yellow Jacket punt, and scoring again.

With 4:08 to play, BHSU led SDM, 41-28, but the Hardrockers had the ball. On the first play from scrimmage, Ahmad Lewis caught a pass, but Keyhawn Farmer poked the ball loose and Kadim Phillip fell on the ball, giving the Yellow Jackets back the football in the red zone. Gilmore's fourth score of the day, this time a one-yard run, would give the Green and Gold a 48-28 lead and secure the rivalry victory.

Eben finished with 211 yards passing and two touchdowns. Gilmore had 134 yards rushing and three scores, while also catching one pass for a touchdown. Defensively, Josh Gurnaby had 11 tackles, while Cole Miller had seven including  sack.

For the Hardrockers, Thomas Creese threw for 166 yards and a touchdown, while Lewis rushed for 185 yards and two scores. Cole Peterson had a game high 18 tackles.
