Yellow Jacket Volleyball Split Final Home Games

Nick Anderson - BHSU Sports - November 2, 2019

SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Black Hills State University teams wrapped up their home games this weekend in a pair of conference games. Splitting the weekend, Regis took Friday winning in three sets while the Yellow Jackets claimed victory over CCU on Saturday winning in five sets.

Friday night saw the Yellow Jackets take on nationally ranked (10th) Regis University. The Green and Gold jumped to an early 7-5 lead. Regis responded with a 10-0 run which sealed the first set in their favor 25-14.

It looked like Regis could not be stopped heading into the 2nd set when they put up an early 8-2 lead. Regis was poised to dominate another set as they continued their offensive assault at one point leading 22-14. Madison Hoopman would record a kill that kicked off an incredible rally pulling the Yellow Jackets even with Regis at 23-23. Unable to sustain the rally, Regis benefited from two attack errors and won the second set 25-23.

In dire need to upset Regis, who has won over 20 straight sets, Black Hills rushed to an early 8-5 lead. With strong defensive efforts and an aggressive offense, BHSU lead Regis through 20 points. Unwilling to let their streak be broken, Regis battled back after tying the score at 22. Kindra Cerrone would force the game to 26 points, but ultimately, Regis took the series 3-0 winning 26-24 in the final set.

Celebrating parent's night on Saturday, The Yellow Jackets were looking to win against conference foe Colorado Christian in their final home game of the 2019 season.

The Yellow Jackets took an aggressive lead in the first set, 8-2, but CCU mounted a slow but steady grind, steadily applying pressure to claw their way to a 20-17 lead. Calling a timeout, the Green and Gold formed a defensive strategy, that proved successful as they claimed the first set 24-22.

The second set saw CCU take an early advantage, which the Yellow Jackets could not recover from as they fell 12-25.

CCU and BHSU played with a sense of familiarity in the third set, going point for point through the entire match until point 21 when CCU put on a 2 point advantage to lead 23-21. Hoopman scored a big kill, tying the set 23-23 and forcing a CCU timeout. Ultimately, CCU proved victorious, taking the third set 25-23.

They Yellow Jackets took the court with a sense of urgency in the fourth set and jumped to a 5-1 lead. CCU dug its way back to tie up the set at 8-8 in which a bitter back and forth would ensue. CCU took a 3 point advantage forcing a Black Hills timeout. The Green and Gold went on a 4-0 run to again even the score. A CCU timeout saw the cougars retake the court with some strong hitting. BHSU was ready and would force set five.

With the series on the line, neither team would budge, continuing the relentless back and forth battle. Finally, BHSU broke the cycle and pulled ahead 2 to take an 11-9 advantage. CCU couldn't recover from this deficit and the Yellow Jackets took the fifth set 15-11.

Offensively on the weekend: Kindra Cerrone lead the weekend with 20 kills, while Sierra Ward and Madison Hoopman were close behind with 18 each. Tess Thomas and Laurel Lech each posted 15 assists.

Defensively on the weekend: No surprise, having the 4th best average in the RMAC, Haedyn Rhodes again led with digs, recording a total of 66 digs. Against CCU Lech also posted 18 digs.

With post season implications on the line, the Green and Gold will take to the road next weekend, facing Chadron State November 8th at 7pm and Metro State on Saturday, November 9th at 5 pm.
