Yellow Jacket men and women drop games to Westminster

Nick Anderson BHSU Athletics - December 6, 2019

SALT LAKE CITY, UT - Unable to stop an 8-0 run by the Westminster Griffins, the Black Hills State University men's basketball team fell in the final minutes of the game 64-65. The Yellow Jackets fall to 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in the RMAC.

The Yellow Jackets held the Griffins at 26-29 heading into the half despite only shooting 28 percent from the field. BHSU came out for the second half and quickly took the lead in the third minute of play. Westminster would grind their way back and the teams would remain competitive until the final six minutes of play when the Green and Gold went a 10-0 score streak to put their lead at 58-48.

With only 2.5 minutes to play, the Yellow Jackets were still leading 64-57. Then, Westminster's Bandon Warr went hot. He hit a two point jump shot, then quickly drained back to back three pointers to seal the game in the Griffins favor.

The Yellow Jackets struggled to make buckets tonight. They averaged 37 percent from the field only making 23 of 62 attempts. From beyond they arc, they only connected six times on 20 shots. The Green and Gold were, however, steady from the charity stripe, making 12 of 14 attempts. The team pulled down 40 boards, 30 of those being defensive.

Joel Scott lead the team in points. He put up 18 points, shooting 45 percent from the field, making 50 percent of his three pointers, and was good for seven of nine free throws. He also posted 5 rebounds.

Tyler Oliver and Sava Dukic each posted 11 points with Oliver recording another double- double with his ten rebounds. Dukic was the top performer from the arc, making three long baskets on the night.

The Yellow Jackets will have to shake off this loss quickly as they return to action tomorrow night at 7:30pm against #16 Dixie State. The Trailblazers remained undefeated tonight with their win over the Hardrockers 77-69.

Meanwhile, A tough third quarter for the Yellow Jackets proved to be too much to overcome as the Westminster Griffins defeated the Black Hills State University Women's basketball team 69-53. The Yellow Jackets fall to 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in the RMAC.

Game play was steady and competitive through the first half. Westminster held the lead much of the first quarter, but the Yellow Jackets were able to outscore the Griffins 18-17 in the first ten minutes of play. The second quarter was much of the same with both teams flipping the lead. Westminster went into half with a slight 32-31 advantage.

The third quarter was disastrous, The Griffins were shooting hot from the field and the Yellow Jackets couldn't connect with the net. Westminster put up 25 points to the Yellow Jackets six. Despite outscoring the Griffins 16-12 in the fourth quarter, the Green and Gold could not overcome their deficient and ultimately fell 53-69.

Racquel Wientjes once again lead BHSU. She posted 22 points shooting 50 percent from the field, 43 percent from beyond the arc, and 62 percent from the charity stripe. She also led the team in rebounds with five.

On the night, the Yellow Jackets only connected 30 percent of their shots, making 18 of 61 from the field. It was the same story from beyond the arc as the team only posted 7 three pointers on 27 attempts. At the free throw line, the Yellow Jackets were good for 10 of 21. The team recorded 26 rebounds, 12 offensive and 14 defensive.

The Green and Gold are looking to rebound tomorrow night at Dixie State. The Trailblazers lost tonight to the Hardrockers in overtime. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
