Rodeo Rapid City brings PRCA performances, bronc futurities, ranch rodeo and more to Black Hills Stock Show

RAPID CITY, SD - Rodeo Rapid City in its 43rd year, is one of the top PRCA rodeos in the nation, nominated 18 times as PRCA’s “Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year”, winning this award twice!   Held in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center’s Barnett Arena, (recently rebranded as ‘The Monument’) it features PRCA’s best- Xtreme Bulls Tour, PRORODEO Tour and Xtreme Bulls Tour. 

PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour Friday, Jan. 31st features top PRCA bull riding contestants competing against the top bulls in the world for over $36,000.   PRORODEO Tour runs Feb. 1st- 8th with seven events and over $200,000 to earn. 

There’s plenty of action for the young rodeo athlete with Rodeo Rapid City’s 20X High School Showcase Rodeo set for  Sunday., Feb. 2nd at 9:30a.m.  The top three high school rodeo competitors in 10 events from four regions of South Dakota  compete for titles, scholarships and awards.  A berth in this prestigious  rodeo is highly sought after by high school competitors.  That, in turn creates an exceptional performance and one that can be enjoyed at no admission cost.

A new week gets underway with the Rodeo Rapid City Ranch Rodeo that features four-person teams in compulsory preliminary events. Set for Mon., Feb. 3rd, the top 12 teams advance to the progressive Finals to determine the Championship Team, Top Hand and Top Horse and $10,000 prize money.

PRCA Xtreme Bronc Match Wednesday, Feb. 5th fields the top 30 PRCA Bronc Riders in the nation competing for a $10,000.  The top three cowboys from the long round advance to the sudden death short round. 

The Saddle Bronc Futurity is in the morning where top PRCA Stock Contractors compete with two-horse teams made up of the future super star colts of rodeo; five years in age or younger.  The top three cowboys from the futurity qualify to the 7:30 pm PRCA Xtreme Bronc Match. Take in the KBHB Bucking Horse Sale in the afternoon and it’s a full day of great bronc riding!

Also on Wednesday, Girls in Spurs “Ladies Night” is a ‘grab your girlfriends’ kind of event. Head out for a night of great food, deserts, and cocktails, runway fashion show, salon services, special event vendors, great prize drawings and more!  Free Admission with PRCA Xtreme Bronc Match ticket or a purchased $20 Girls in Spurs Ticket.  Event tickets are sold at the Rodeo Zone Tradeshow.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in the nation. Mounted shooting contestants compete in this fast action, timed event, using two .45 caliber single action revolvers each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition.  Cowboy Mounted Shooting has a variety of levels of competition for everyone, ranging from novice levels to the seasoned professional.  Competitions are Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 5th-6th at 10:00 am.

Freestyle Bullfight Competition got its start at Rodeo Rapid City.  Catch the first-round action Thursday and Friday, Feb 6th-7th at 1:00 pm where the bull fighter competitors will each compete 40-70 seconds, trying to convince a judge their fight is best. Top competitors advance into the evening performances where they will compete head to head and one will be crowned the 2020 Rodeo Rapid City Freestyle Bull Fight Champion!

Rodeo personnel include PRCA Announcer of the Year nominee, Will Rasmussen, 22X Clown of the Year, Specialty Act of the Year, Coors Man in the Can, Keith Isley and the Young Living Percheron Hitch. 

Don’t miss out on the fun and excitement in the Rodeo Zone Trade Show, Friday, Jan. 31st  through Saturday, Feb. 8th, located in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center’s Ice Arena.   Vendor booths, Kid’s Dummy Roping, “Back Stage with a Rodeo Clown”, autograph sessions, door prizes, Kiddie Korral, Beefy Chili Cookoff, Whiskey & Tip Tasting and see the Young Living Percherons Hitch. 

The ever-popular and award winning horse trainer Rodney Yost will hold clinics Saturday, Feb. 1st and Saturday, Feb. 8th at 10:00a.m. These free clinics show several horses at different riding levels and the process of creating a horse that respects the rider.  Questions are taken throughout the demonstrations for a more interactive experience.
