Daniel Savelsberg Beckman Sr.

- January 16, 2020

Daniel Savelsberg Beckman Sr. was born August 13, 1947 in Rapid City, SD and passed away January 11, 2020 at his home on the ranch in Prairie City, SD.

Daniel was the youngest of six children born to Oscar "Ted" and Elva (Savelsberg) Beckman of Prairie City, SD.  He attended North Strool School and Bison High School.  Spending his life working on the ranch, he took pride in raising Angus cattle.  Daniel had a love for horses and enjoyed riding a horse that had a good long trot that he could cover a lot of ground with.  He rode many horses and trailed many cattle.

On May 10, 1969, Daniel married the love of his life Kathryn Shuman of Laverne, OK.  Together they had three children, Crystal, Dan Jr., and Cherina.  Daniel and Kathy spent many hours together.  Whether it was working on the ranch, going to church, or making a trip to town, if you saw one, you generally saw them both.  After 41 years of marriage, Kathy passed away from cancer in 2010.

Those who knew Daniel would tell you he was a good man.  He was a man full of faith, which gave him the strength to persevere.  Being a strong man who stood for what was right; he set a good example for his family.  He had a kind heart and loved to have a good laugh. His beautiful singing voice could be heard in church or just riding in the pickup with him.  We also enjoyed listening to his stories of the past. We loved him for all the special times we had with him and for the special things he did for us.

Throughout his lifetime, he served as a board member for the Beckman Memorial Wesleyan Church, the Prairie City Volunteer Fire Department, and the Bison School Board.

He is survived by his 3 children: Crystal (Shane) Batey, Dan Jr (Jenny) Beckman, and Cherina Beckman (Kevin Crabtree); 8 grandchildren: Laramie Batey, Shace Batey, Joshua Beckman, Dylan Beckman, Jaren Beckman, Jaylie Beckman, Hope Crabtree, and Will Crabtree; 1 great granddaughter Tayleigh Batey; one honorary grandson Derric Brisendine; 4 sisters, 2 brother-in-laws, and 1 sister-in-law: Beatrice Stone, Anna Marie Anderson, Elva Belle (Rodney) Carr, Eunice (Richard) Peck, Wanda Shuman; 6 nephews, 4 nieces, and their spouses:  Jonathon (Cynthia) Stone, Daniel (Pam) Stone, Robert Carr, Dewayne (Vicky) Carr, Rich (Trish) Peck, Chet Carr, Theodora (Joel) Larson, Deanna (Lacy) Bartee, Roberta (Alan) Kolb, and Anita (Brian) Jamerson, and many nieces and nephews in Oklahoma on Kathy's side.
