South Dakota businesses struggle as they make changes in response to virus

Mark Russo/KELO Radio - March 20, 2020

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Businesses in South Dakota are making all sorts of changes to keep serving customers in these days of social distancing.

Curb-side service, for example.

"Call up a business owner, tell them what you are looking for, drive up and the business owner will come out and hand that to you right there while you are in your car," says President of the State Retailers Association Nathan Sanderson.

Sanderson says some grocery stores have started reserved shopping hours for the elderly and others, most at risk of getting the Coronavirus. Restaurants are putting hand sanitizers all over the place, and spacing out tables to keep people farther apart.

And even if you can't get to a business, or don't want to, Sanderson says at least show them some 'love' online.

"Go and find those mom and pop shops you like and 'like' their page on Facebook, share some good experiences that you've had...give them a good review that praises the customer service.." That way they can use all the praise to help jump-start their businesses when things get back to normal.

He expects most businesses will weather this unprecedented storm, but, unfortunately, not all.

"We're absolutely going to see some businesses close as a result of this, absolutely."
