State records another spike in active COVID-19 cases Monday

Gary Matthews - July 6, 2020

PIERRE, S.D. – For the second day in a row, South Dakota saw a spike in the number of active cases of COVID-19.

According to the Department of Health, there were 42 new cases of COVID-19, sending the active caseload across the state up 42 to 945. Although the number of new cases over the past two days have been relatively low, they are outpacing the number of recoveries.

Pennington County reported 15 new positive COVID-19 tests, sending their active caseload up 15 to 149. Other new cases across western South Dakota include 4 in Oglala Lakota and reporting their first ever case of COVID-19 today was Haakon County.

The virus has now spread to 61 of the state’s 66 counties. The only counties without confirmed coronavirus infections are Butte, Harding, Jones, Perkins and Potter.

The number of people hospitalized due to COVID-19 remained the same as Sunday at 59.

The state’s death toll also remained at 97 with no new deaths reported.
