Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Brown

Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Brown

Elizabeth Jane Brown

- July 14, 2020

Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Brown was born July 30, 1930, in Newell, SD, as the youngest of six children to Harry and Ada (Greene) Cunningham.  Betty often joked about being of “hardy pioneer stock” and anyone born in those times would have lived through difficult circumstances that would have tested and tried their faith.  Betty graduated from Newell High School and attended Yankton College for a short time.

She met and married John Brown on June 25, 1951, and their marriage of 61 years was a blessing to their two daughters and their families.  Betty worked many years in banking but her heart was always with her family and friends and how she could minister to them.  Whether it was having people in for a meal, baking or cooking for her family, her kitchen was where you could find her.

To her grandchildren, she was known as the “Cookie Grandma.”  She knew each one’s favorite cookie and then would delight in making them as a special secret gift to hide in their graduation luggage set.  She would plan for weeks about what to hide in all the compartments that would highlight a special memory between her and her grandchildren.  As the granddaughters grew up, they would all delight in spending a Saturday with “G’ma” learning how to make her special Christmas candies and cookies that would always be shared around the neighborhood.

Betty was an active member of St James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche for many years.  Her faith in Jesus as her Lord and Savior was evident in her life every day.  She would often profess that the “golden years” weren’t always so golden but with God’s help, she could make it through.  Her legacy to her family will be her unwavering faith.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Deb (Kim) Richardson of Grant, NE, Barb (Mike) Hansen of Spearfish,  and Tish (Gene) Beckwith of Reliance, SD; her sister, Ruth Jones of O’Neill, NE; 11 grandchildren, Josh (Heather) Richardson, Jeremiah (Karyn) Richardson, Jarod (Jamie) Richardson, Justin (Debbie) Richardson, Julianna Richardson (Austin Bestgen), Anna (Ryan) Smith, Jerrold (Bethany) Hansen, Elizabeth (Jason) Gellett, Jonathan (Katharine) Hansen, and Michael and Andrew Beckwith; and 13 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces, along with siblings and their spouses of the Brown family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; and four siblings, Robert, Mabel, Donald, and Lois.

Visitation will be 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 17, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be live streamed at Kinkade Funeral Chapel Facebook page.  The graveside services, which are open to the public, will be held at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

A memorial has been established in Betty’s memory to Garden Hills Assisted Living in Spearfish.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.kinkadefunerals.com.
