Owen Cass throws for over 300 yards as Sturgis beats Mitchell Friday night

Gary Matthews & Bob Haivala - October 9, 2020

STURGIS, S.D. - Sturgis celebrated homecoming in a big way with a dominating 42-20 win over Mitchell Friday night.

Sophomore Quarterback Owen Cass threw for over 300 yards and threw for 5 touchdowns as the Scoopers improve to 3-4 on the season.

Sturgis opened up the game on an 80-plus yard touchdown catch and run by Sanden Graham on their first play from scrimmage to take a 7-0 lead.

Mitchell would answer on an 18-yard touchdown run by Quarterback Tucker Vilhauer. The Kernels missed the extra point and the Scoopers led 7-6.

Sturgis would extend the lead to 10-6 on a 20-yard field goal by Brodie Eisenbraun with 1:46 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Mitchell would take the lead on a 3-yard touchdown run by Parker Phillips to make it 13-10.

Sturgis quickly answered with a 54-yard touchdown pass to Graham to make it 17-13.

Sturgis got the ball back on a Mitchell turnover, and turned into another score as Kaden Phillips took a Cass pass to the end zone from 31-yards out to make it 22-13.

Vilahuer and the Kernels answered the score on a 62-yard run down the right sideline for six points to cut the lead to 22-20.

Then, with just 2.7-seconds left in the second quarter, Cass would find Phillips again on a 52-yard touchdown strike to take a 29-20 lead into halftime.

Sturgis kept Mitchell scoreless in the second half, but added two more scores of their own, a 2-yard touchdown run by Wren Jacobs and a 22-yard touchdown catch by Kaden Philips, who finished with 3 scores on the night.

Up next for Sturgis will be at Belle Fourche next Friday night.
