Arlene Edna Woodford

Arlene Edna Woodford

- December 8, 2020

Arlene Edna Woodford was born on October 12, 1935 in Sturgis, SD to Arden and Bertha (Murray) Hannant, joining siblings, Wayne, who was 17 years older and was in the Army, already headed to WWII, and Stella, who was 13 years older.

Arlene grew up in Sturgis, graduating from Sturgis High School in 1953. It was there she met her high school sweetheart, Jordon Woodford. They were married on July 4, 1954, and Arlene then embarked on a journey as a military wife, moving to Fairbanks, AK and then Big Spring, TX while Jordon served in the United States Air Force. After Jordon was honorably discharged, they moved to Brookings, where they lived while Jordon attended SDSU. They later moved to Huron, where they spent the next 20 years. Together, Arlene and Jordon raised 3 children, Karl, Karen, and Jolene. Eventually the family moved to Alamosa, CO, where they spent the next five years. Jordon took early medical retirement, and they returned to Huron, SD in 1986, where they remained until Jordon passed away in 1993. In 1999, Arlene moved to the Black Hills to be closer to her family.

Arlene was mainly a stay-at-home mom for many years, but she also worked several jobs here and there, including working for Weimer’s Bakery in Sturgis and a vet clinic in Brookings, she did some bookkeeping while in Alamosa, and then worked as a door greeter for Sam’s Club in Rapid City. When she wasn’t working or looking after the kids, Arlene had many hobbies she enjoyed. She had a passion for music, playing both the piano and the accordion, and especially enjoyed family jam sessions. She watched all of her granddaughters’ sporting events, and loved to garden, knit, read, and care for her beloved cat, Daisy Bell, who she absolutely adored. Arlene was a member of Buttons & Bows in Sturgis for a number of years. Above all, Arlene cherished time spent with family and friends, and she will be dearly missed.

Arlene Woodford, 85, died of natural causes on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at the Clarkson Mountain View Health Care Facility in Rapid City.

She is survived by her children, Karen Woodford of Rapid City, and Jolene (Dale) Schmidt of Piedmont; granddaughters, Jessica and Danielle Schmidt; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Arlene is preceded in death by her husband, Jordon; her son, Karl (1986); her parents, Arden and Bertha; and her siblings, Wayne Hannant and Stella Harwood.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. A private family committal service will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Arlene’s memory to the Clarkson Mountain View Health Care Facility.
