Carolyn Sue Koan

Carolyn Sue Koan

- December 9, 2020

Carol’s story began on November 1, 1944, in Spearfish, SD. She was born at home to Robert and Creta (Moller) Wolf, who lived less than two miles from the final home she shared with her husband of 58 years, Robert Koan. Carol was the sixth of 13 children, Barb, Linda, Betty, Bonnie, Mary, Pearl, Eddy, Bobby, Frank, Billy, David and Martin. Carol’s family moved to St. Onge, SD, but Carol and her sister got an apartment together later in high school and moved to Spearfish. Carol met Bob when she worked at the Yknot Café in 1960.

In 1962, Carol and Bob were married in Deadwood, SD. With their young family, Carol and Bob lived in Rapid City until 1963 when they moved to Billings, MT. In 1964, they moved to Belle Fourche, SD, and in the spring of 1969, they moved to Spearfish where they raised their three boys.

Carol was a waitress and cook for a number of years in high school and after. In 1976, Carol turned her love for children into a business when she started her in-home daycare. Care and love were returned to Carol by the hundreds of children she helped raise at Home of the Little Wranglers.

Carol and Bob were always together. They traveled the country by motorcycle for 43 years. From a Kawasaki 400 to a Honda Goldwing, Bob and Carol rode more than 250,000 miles coast to coast on their motorcycle. Most of their time was spent on the west half of the United States. When they stopped riding motorcycles, they continued to travel the country together by vehicle, making regular trips to Carol’s favorite place, the Big Horns.

Many homes, including her own, are decorated with hand-made crafts that were designed and painted by Carol, cut by Bob and painted and finished by Carol. She also loved seeing and taking pictures of a beautiful sunrise or sunset, especially if she was with Bob.

Carol will be remembered for her unconditional love for family and friends. She was a Boy Scout leader and followed youth sports for 40 years by attending athletic events for her boys, grandchildren and daycare children. Carol loved a full house and made holidays and family gatherings special through her love for cooking and baking. It could be said that Carol wanted to make sure everyone was fed, because a picnic was a five-course meal. Her house, which always had at least one dog and one cat, was open to everyone. If you needed something, Carol provided, and will be greatly missed.

Carolyn Sue Koan, 76, of Spearfish died December 5, 2020, at Monument Health Spearfish Hospital.

Carol is survived by her husband, Bob; sons, Ron, Terry (Bridget), and Scott (Misty); grandchildren, Tel (Kara), Dani, Josh (Darcy), and Ethan; great-grandchildren, Tyrel, and Rozyn; niece, who was like a daughter, Melissa Rabenburg; great-nieces, Lanee Powers, and Faith (Willie) Moffitt; and dozens of nieces and nephews.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Creta Wolf; sisters, Barb Haggberg, Linda Wolf, Mary Harkin, and Bonnie Eastman; brothers, Bobby Wolf, and Eddy Wolf; and daughter-in-law, Kim Koan.

Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 11, 2020, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, SD.
