Black Hills region among fastest growing in state

RAPID CITY, SD - The Black Hills is one of the fastest growing regions in the state of South Dakota – 20 percent faster than any other area in the state. 

Rapid City itself as has grown to over 55 square miles with almost 400 miles of roads within that area that constitutes a large surface area for a city the size of Rapid City.

Rapid City has a population of around 74,000 people. Its square mileage is slightly smaller than Minneapolis, which is 58 square miles, and larger than San Francisco, that has 47.9 square miles.

The fastest growing area in the Black Hills is Summerset, growing 20 percent each year, compared to Rapid City which is growing about one percent per year.

The areas surrounding Piedmont and Rapid Valley are also  among the top growing areas. Box Elder, Hill City and Spearfish are all posting significant gains.
