City gifts Sturgis Motorcycle Museum with deed

Gary Matthews - March 20, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum opened up in the old Sturgis Post Office on Main Street in 2001.

In need of expansion, the City of Sturgis has signed over the building’s deed to the volunteers of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. That allows the museum to continue to grow.

An addition of 2,500 feet will be added to accommodate more visitors, house a Sturgis timeline exhibit and add a virtual reality exhibit to the museum.

Because a second motorcycle museum is being planned, Executive Director Myrick Robbins says the project will also incorporate a bit of a different theme.

"The new theme will cover everything from the early days of Pappy and Pearl Hoel to the Jackpine Gypsies to commercialized Sturgis Rally that we know today. There is still going to be a lot of information to be shared so we are going to need all that space,"

The second motorcycle museum is in the works for land near Vanocker Canyon, off I-90’s Exit 32. Plans include an amphitheater for music, more space for vendors during the rally, more exhibits, and outdoor space for non-rally events.

Commemorative bricks of the original post office are available for purchase. More information at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.
