CRP Enrollments Accepted through August 17

News Staff - June 25, 2018

PIERRE, S.D. – The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced signup opportunities for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).  Local Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices are taking applications for enrollment into certain continuous CRP practices through Aug. 17.

Practices currently eligible for CRP enrollment include: grassed waterways, filter strips, riparian buffers, wetland restoration, the farmable wetlands pilot and duck nesting habitat. A key component of the duck nesting habitat practice is the allowance of up to 10 acres of upland per acre of eligible wetland to be enrolled.  This allowance creates important nesting and concealment habitat for variety of ground nesting birds and other grassland dependent wildlife. All of these CRP practices provide 50 percent cost-share to establish grassland habitat on cropland acres and provide an annual rental payment for 10 to 15 years.

“Adding habitat to South Dakota’s landscape by enrolling land into CRP is great for South Dakota’s wildlife, agricultural producers, landowners, and hunters. Restoring grasslands and wetlands through CRP will provide important habitat for pheasants, ducks, deer, and pollinators, like the monarch butterfly and honey bees,” says senior wildlife biologist, Mark Norton.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks encourages those interested in CRP enrollment to contact a habitat advisor listed on http://habitat.sd.gov/ advisors/default.aspx or through the local FSA office.
