World Bucking Colt Futurity coming to Faith Stock Show & Rodeo

F.Ganje - August 7, 2018

FAITH, SD – Just like there’s a genetic code that is part of a good ranch horse, the same can be said of a bucking horse.  And thanks to advancements in technology such as DNA, the bucking horse industry is finding it’s footing in more accurately identifying up and coming offspring.

Enter the bucking colt futurity world that will be on display at the Faith Stock Show & Rodeo, Wednesday, August 8, 2018. Producer Joe Waln is one of the managers of the World Futurity Association (WFA) that represents individual bucking horse breeders and small contractors.

“They’re breeders from all across the United States who want to get to the year-end championship,” says Waln. “A lot of these people have raised the mom’s, the dad’s and the colts. It’s a unique business.” He continues, “It’s a lot like the cutting horse business or the race horse business. We have a registry now that keeps track of the horses, using DNA. We now have a strong foundation to keep track of the legacy of these animals.”

The Faith Stock Show & Rodeo World Futurity gets underway at 10:00a.m. at the fairgrounds.  Waln expects around 30 entries of two and three year old colts. Judging is based on kick, lift, motion and pattern.

“We use 15 pound dummy boxes on the horses,” he explains. “There is a remote trigger and when the required six seconds is up, the dummy is tripped electronically. That releases the rigging from the horse. The horses are judged based on ability in these futurities where they compete for money and points.”

As a means to get horses in front of a buying public, the Faith event is set on the same day as the PRCA Faith Match Bronc Ride.  Waln says that will put some big stock contractors in the seats to watch and possibly bid on colts.

“This year, the bronc match is held the same day as the futurity. As a sanctioned PRCA xtreme event, pro stock contractors will be there earlier in the day preparing for the match bronc ride. They’ll  have a chance to see these colts first hand and consider buying. This futurity is a unique event in that sense.”

The whole idea is to bring horses on that can stand up to and shine on the national stage.  Prices in the hundreds of thousands of dollars are paid for bucking stock at some of the larger futurities, including the WFA Finals set for December 6, 2018 and held as part of the famous Benny Binion Bucking Horse & Bull Sale in Las Vegas, NV during the PRCA National Finals Rodeo.

“We felt the need for an organization that would have a group of futurities, tally points and host a year-end finale at the NFR,” shares Waln. “The association has grown to have over 70 futurities in a year held across the United States and Canada.”

You could see a world champion in the making at the Faith Stock Show & Rodeo World Futurity, a free event that Waln encourages rodeo fans to attend.  “I think this is the fourth year of the futurity at Faith. It’s been a very good event.  There have been a number of colts at the Faith sale that have gone on to be big pro earners.”

He continues, “If you love to watch bucking horses, plan to be in the seats for this futurity.”
