Newell Labor Day celebration offers rodeos, tractor pulls and more

F.Ganje - August 24, 2018

NEWELL, SD – For the reigning rodeo queen, the Newell Labor Day celebration is a family affair.  Carrietta Schalesky, Faith, SD, the current crown wearer, says the long-time event has been a ‘must-attend’ date on the family calendar for as long as she can remember.

“Since I was old enough to walk, it’s always been a big family tradition to go to the Newell Labor Day celebration,” she shares. “We’ve always either watched or competed in the rodeo.”

Set for August 31, 2018 through September 3, 2018, the four day celebration offers parades, lots of rodeo action, games and activities for the kids, all mixed in with dances, a tractor pull and many more community events.

“My favorite part is that the celebration is focused on family-oriented events that are full of excitement and a lot of fun for a lot of different people,” she notes. “The Newell Labor Day celebration brings a lot of family and friends together.”

This year’s queen competition will see some new ‘bling’, with the retiring of the decades old rodeo queen’s crown to be replaced with a new one – a project that Carrietta is proud of.

“We have had the same crown for this title for the past 20 years. I wanted to design something that was more specific to the Newell Labor Day celebration,” she says.  “It is an absolutely beautiful piece of work.” She adds,  “We’ll be retiring the old crown on Monday, September 3, 2018 and it will remain on display in the Newell Museum.”

As Newell’s rodeo queen, Carrietta has had a busy year attending events in South Dakota as well as a national competition in Las Vegas, NV.

“Immediately after winning the Newell Labor Day Rodeo crown, I competed in the National Miss Indian Rodeo Queen contest in Las Vegas.  Following that, I traveled around the state, representing Newell, carrying sponsor flags in rodeos and helping at other rodeo related events.”

She is especially excited about a new event added to this year’s Newell Labor Day celebration – a bucking horse futurity set for Saturday, September 1, 2018.

This futurity allows contractors and others to bring their rankest broncs to town.  Contractors pay to buck two horses with points going towards the World Futurity Association Futurity held during the NFR in Las Vegas. Organizers hope for 24 horses in the inaugural event that will also see top saddle bronc cowboys competing on those horses.

In addition to the futurity, a Ranch Rodeo, the Corey Price Memorial Roping and the Labor Day Rodeo rounds out the arena action to be found over the Labor Day weekend in Newell, where attendance doubles the size of the community.

“Even though Newell, SD isn’t a very big town,” says Carrietta, “a lot of people come from a long distance to be a part of the celebration.”

And she points to the many volunteers and the Newell Community Club who all work together to produce a fun-filled Labor Day weekend that can be enjoyed by everyone.  “And for me personally, I would like to add a thanks to all the people, businesses,  and organizations who supported me in representing the community this past year, which has been an honor.”

For more information, the Newell Labor Day Rodeo is on Facebook as is the Newell Community Club where additional events and schedules are posted.
