South Dakota Crops Progressing Ahead of Averages

UNDATED - For the week ending Sunday, there were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 11 percent very short, 28 short, 60 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 12 percent very short, 29 short, 58 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Corn condition rated 5 percent very poor, 9 poor, 22 fair, 46 good, and 18 excellent. Corn dough was 94 percent, ahead of 77 last year and 83 for the five-year average. Dented was 56 percent, well ahead of 22 last year and 28 average. Mature was 3 percent, near 1 average.

Soybean condition rated 6 percent very poor, 9 poor, 26 fair, 45 good, and 14 excellent. Soybeans setting pods was 97 percent, near 93 both last year and average. Dropping leaves was 16 percent, ahead of 5 last year and 6 average.

Spring wheat harvested was 97 percent, ahead of 92 last year and 82 average.

Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 5 poor, 27 fair, 67 good, and 1 excellent. Sorghum headed was 92 percent, near 94 last year and 96 average. Coloring was 41 percent, ahead of 27 last year, and near 38 average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 7 percent very poor, 14 poor, 32 fair, 43 good, and 4 excellent.
