Bronc Futurity debuts at Newell Labor Day celebration

F.Ganje - August 29, 2018

NEWELL, SD – The annual Newell Labor Day celebration will showcase stock contractors and cowboys at the first annual Newell Bronc Futurity. With added money for both stock contractors and cowboys, rodeo chairman Matt Mangis is excited about offering both contestants and spectators a high-energy event. The inaugural event is set for Saturday, September 1, 2018 beginning at 2:00p.m.

“It’s getting to where these stock contractors with their breeding programs want venues where they can show that off and be able to win some money versus just going down the road to rodeo’s.” he observes. “A stock contractor is more likely to bring a better horse to a futurity because they have to pay to enter the horse.”

Unlike a regular bronc match where contractors are paid each time a horse is bucked, a futurity ramps up the pressure for contractors who pay to buck their horses.  At the Newell event, set for Saturday, September 1, 2018, contractors and private individuals will bring two horses each – all four and five-year-old proven stock.  Added money sweetens the pot for both contractors and cowboys.

“The big thing about a futurity is that stock contractors are more apt to win some money. In a bronc match, the contractor is paid for an out – every time one of their horses is bucked, they’re paid money. A bronc futurity involves paying an association fee to the World Futurity Association (WFA) and an entry fee, per horse.  The contractor gets a 100 percent payback from that pot.”

The event is sanctioned by the WFA.  At the Newell futurity, horses will earn points each time they buck.  Those points go towards year-end tallies with the hopes of qualifying for the World Futurity Bronc Match in Las Vegas, Nevada during the National Finals Rodeo in December.

“There are four judges, two for the cowboys and two for the horses. If horses buck good, the score sheets go to the WFA which then goes towards qualifying for the World event,” says Mangis.

Stock contractors can enter horses online by going to http://www.worldfuturity.com. Cowboys can enter by calling Matt Mangis at 605-415-3462 or Cleve Schmidt at 605-430-7319.

The Newell Labor Day weekend kicks off on Friday, August 31, 2018  with a ranch rodeo. Teams consist  of five people that include one woman, one under the age of 14, one over 50, one mutton buster under 60 pounds and one other team member.

The bronc futurity is on Saturday followed by a street dance. Sunday will be the Cory Price Memorial Roping with breakaway, high school team roping and an open team roping. The weekend will conclude on Monday, September 3, 2018  with the parade downtown along with other events throughout the community, followed by the rodeo queen coronation and Newell Labor Day Rodeo.
