The Funeral Service for Hazel Kruse, age 99 of Glad Valley, will be held at 2:00pm Friday, September 7, 2018 at the Prince of Peace Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.  Pastor Barb West will officiate with burial in Greenhill Cemetery at Lemmon.

HAZEL LORRAINE KRUSE was born at home on September 4, 1918 in Cuba, Illinois to Snowden and Hatty (Johnson) Morgan.  Hazel attended elementary and high school in Fulton County, Illinois.  After graduation from high school she was employed at Carrps Department Store in Canton, Illinois.  During the summer of 1944, she and a girlfriend took the train out west to visit relatives who lived on the adjacent farm next to the Kruse homestead south of Lemmon.  There she met her future husband Marvin who was working for her relatives.  Hazel and Marvin where married February 14, 1945 in Canton, Illinois.  They move to Des Plaines, Illinois where they both were employed at Douglas Aircraft.  In 1946, they returned to Lemmon and then purchased a ranch with Marvin’s brother Edgar a few miles north of Glad Valley.  They continued to enjoy their life together on the ranch and raised their only son Stanley in this quiet and peaceful community.  In the summer of 1955 Hazel was offered her first teaching position at Twin Butte School in Corson County.  There she developed a love for teaching first grade students to read and write.  Hazel continued her teaching education by attending night classes, correspondence courses and summer school at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, SD.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree August 9, 1974 from Black Hills State College.  She was the first of her siblings to receive a college degree.  Hazel continued teaching for 18 years at numerous rural schools in Corson and Harding Counties.

Hazel’s hobbies included crocheting, sewing and a love for raising flowers.  She also loved to travel including a Carribean cruise on their 40th wedding anniversary.  She and her husband spent several winters with their son in Honolulu, Hawaii.  After Marvin’s passing Hazel spent several winters with her friends in Apache Junction, AZ and several winters with her son in Newport Beach, California.  After her son’s retirement, they moved back to the family ranch at Glad Valley where she continued to enjoy country life until her recent illness.

Hazel passed away August 30, 2018 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.  She passed away peacefully with family and friends at her side. The angels came and took her away to her eternal home after at brief battle with cancer.

Hazel is survived by her son Stanely, Glad Valley, SD; sister-in-law, Ruth Adams, Ft Meade, SD; nephews, Ronald (Nick) Morgan and Gary Morgan, niece, Connie Bergagna and numerous nieces and nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marvin, two brothers Marvin and Dwayne Morgan, sister Veda Conner and nephew Alan Conner.

She will be missed by her many friends and family.

Visitation will be on Friday from 9:00am to 2:00pm at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
