Merl Eugene Harp

Merl Eugene Harp

Merl Eugene Harp

- September 1, 2018

Merl was the youngest of three children born to Edgar and Luella (Brookhart) Harp on April 2, 1927, in McCall, ID, at the family home.

Merl graduated from Cascade High School in 1945.  Immediately he enlisted in the United States Navy and was sent to San Diego, CA.  He received his Certificate of Graduation by the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Navy Department, Washington, D.C. for Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class.

He married June E. Noland while in San Diego in 1945.  Gregory Eugene Harp was born in Council, ID, in 1948, and Jeffrey Merl Harp was also born there in 1951.

Merl worked with his brother, Everette Harp, sawing logs for MacGregor Logging.  Later, MacGregor Logging expanded their business to include utility line construction and highway road construction, and called it MacGregor Triangle.

Merl moved his family of four from Council to Boise, ID, in 1955.  The corporation MacTrico was established and Merl was promoted to Vice-President.  In 1968, Merl worked for Boise Cascade.  His primary job was equipment procurement for The Minnesota Woodland Division, International Falls, MN, and Merl and June moved to Minnesota.

In 1971, Merl transferred to Osage, WY, to start a softwood chip plant for Boise Cascade.

In 1972, Merl and June divorced.  Later in the year, Merl married Helen Kennedy and her two children, Tony and Dana.  Merl and Helen separated in 1980.  That union was dissolved in 1991.

Greg came to work in Osage, employed by DME Enterprises and logged for Boise Cascade for a period.

The softwood chip plant in Osage was closed in 1979.  At that time, Merl and Gary Mallams started a partnership.  The Powder River Timber Sawmill was created and continued until 1991.

Merl contacted Jeff in 1980 and asked him to move to Osage to be an independent contractor hauling logs for Powder River Timber, which Jeff did.  Jeff and Patty and their two daughters, Tifnee and Katie, moved from Boise, ID, to Osage, WY.

Merl and Arlene enjoyed 38 years of happiness from 1980 to 2018.  They were married in 1997 until his death in 2018.  Together they traveled with Jim and Kathy Dixon on many trips.  Merl enjoyed hunting, camping, and fishing trips with his brother and his sons, Mike Waggener and Kenny McCullum.  He spent many hours playing golf and poker with friends.  Merl and Jim Dixon were active in the Newcastle and Sheridan Masonic Lodge and the Kalif Shriner Lodge in Sheridan, WY.  Merl also received his 50-year pin from the Masonic Lodge in Cambride, ID.

When Merl and Arlene married, he accepted the responsibility of Arlene’s son, Bill Senior, and raised him as his own.  Merl directed him and helped Bill grow into the man he is today.  Bill often thanked Merl and expressed his appreciation.  He treated Bill as an equal with Greg and Jeff.

After the Powder River Timber Sawmill closed, Merl continued to work for the Dixon Brothers and Tom Farnsworth.  His work ethic was deeply driven and he passed that on to his sons.

Merl Eugene Harp passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, with Arlene by his side, holding his hand.  In peace he left this temporary home in Newcastle, WY.

Merl leaves behind his wife, Arlene; and his sons, Greg Harp, Jeff Harp, and Bill Senior, along with each of their families.

Merl is preceded in death by his father, Edgar Harp of Cascade, ID; his mother, Luella Harp, of Boise, ID; his brother, Everette Harp of Kuna, ID; and his sister, Thelma Thomlinson of Boise, ID.

Memorial graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2018, at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors.

A memorial has been established to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Merl’s name.
