South Dakota Begins Planting Winter Wheat

UNDATED - For the week ending Sunday, there were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 15 percent very short, 25 short, 59 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 16 percent very short, 27 short, 56 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Corn condition rated 6 percent very poor, 8 poor, 21 fair, 45 good, and 20 excellent. Corn dough was 98 percent, ahead of 88 last year and 91 for the five-year average. Dented was 73 percent, well ahead of 40 last year and 50 average. Mature was 14 percent, ahead of 1 last year and 4 average.

Soybean condition rated 9 percent very poor, 11 poor, 23 fair, 43 good, and 14 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 25 percent, ahead of 15 last year and 16 average.

Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 30 fair, 63 good, and 2 excellent. Sorghum headed was 95 percent, near 97 last year and 98 average. Coloring was 53 percent, ahead of 40 last year, but behind 58 average. Mature was 1 percent, behind 6 last year, and near 5 average.

Winter wheat planted was 1 percent, equal to average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 10 percent very poor, 15 poor, 35 fair, 37 good, and 3 excellent.
