Donald Eugene Brandt

- September 8, 2018

On Monday, September 3, 2018, Donald Eugene Brandt passed away peacefully at the age of 80. He was in the Fort Meade VA Medical Center in Fort Meade, SD.

Donald was born August 21, 1938 in Royal, NE to Vernal and Iona (Anderson) Brandt.  He graduated from Neligh High School in May 1956 and joined the US Navy.  Donald proudly served for three years before he was honorably discharged in 1959.  He married Phyllis Joan Schilousky on August 6, 1960 and to this marriage five children were born, Linda, Debra, Sandra, Wanda, and Larry.

He enjoyed horses and working on ranches in his younger years.  He then went into truck driving for various companies until he moved to Rapid City, SD in 1999.  He retired in 2003.  Donald enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing.  He liked to watch football and his favorite team was the Nebraska Huskers.  He enjoyed John Wayne movies.  Donald had a passion for bowling and made many great friends at Robbinsdale Lanes. He bowled on two leagues, Family Affair and King Pins.  A special group of friends would meet on Wednesday afternoons at Hardee’s on Haines Avenue where they would have coffee and solve all the world’s problems.  Donald was a friendly and outgoing person that would help anyone.  He had a fun sense of humor and always had a story to tell.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Vernal and Iona Brandt; wife, Phyllis; and daughter, Debra.

He is survived by his children, Linda, Sandra, Wanda, and Larry; grandchildren, Lindsay, Kelsey, Nicholas, Travis, Corey, Cody, Christian and Alex; great grandchildren, Jacob, Hailey, Sevyn, Emma, Caitlin, Lillian, William and Addison; sister, Udonna; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to thank Ron England, Carleen Cunningham, Rafael Herrera,  Julia Kleinschmit, and all of his bowling and coffee friends for being so good to him.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 10:30 am at Black Hills National Cemetery with Pastor Donald England officiating.  Military honors will be provided by the Sturgis Volunteer Honor Guard and the United States Navy.
