Scoopers vs Yankton

Yankton field goal ends Scooper season

Gary Matthews & Terry Anderson - October 26, 2018

YANKTON, S.D. - The Yankton Bucks escaped with a 23-22 win over Sturgis Thursday night to keep their postseason alive.

It wasn't easy.

Sturgis led 22-20 and punted to Yankton with under :30 seconds to play. A 58-yard pass from Quarterback Ethan Wishon to Miles Cards with :26 seconds left set Yankton up in field goal range.

After an incomplete pass in the end zone, Yankton brought in Cole Sawatzke to try a 35-yard field goal to win it. Sawatzke's kick was right through the uprights and the Bucks escaped with a one point win.

Sturgis dominated most of the game. The only offense in the first half was a 22-yard field goal by Cody Eisenbraun giving the Scoopers a 3-0 lead.

Yankton took the lead in the third quarter on a 25-yard touchdown catch and run by Michael Drotzmann.

Sturgis would answer with a 13-yard touchdown catch by Cedrick Stabber to give the Scoopers a 15-14 lead.

Yankton fumbled on their very next possession, and Sturgis turned it into a touchdown on a 3-yard run by Manny Gallosa.

Leading 22-14, Yankton closed the gap on an 11 yard touchdown run by Collin Zahrbock. Yankton would fail on the ensuing 2-point conversion, and trailed 22-20 with 3:00 minutes to play.

Sturgis would get one first down on the ensuing possession, but would end up punting with around :30 to play -- giving Yankton time for the big pass play to set up the winning field goal.
