Cammack's recognized by SDCA for highest conservation award

SDCA - November 7, 2018

HURON, SD - The South Dakota Cattlemen's Association (SDCA) will honor members for their dedication to the organization and for environmental stewardship efforts during the upcoming 70th Annual Convention and Trade Show scheduled for Nov. 27-29, 2018 at the Crossroads Hotel and Huron Event Center.

Larry Stomprud, SDCA President, noted, "We look forward to the chance to acknowledge the efforts of our grassroots members who work hard on behalf of SDCA. The members are the foundation of SDCA's success and the SDCA Convention is a great platform to highlight their achievements."

The Cammack Ranch of Union Center is the 2018 Leopold Conservation Award winner for South Dakota. As Governor Dennis Daugaard noted in his Earth Day announcement of the award winners, "In South Dakota, we are fortunate to live on a landscape managed by dedicated farming and ranching families. For generations, they've known that their livelihoods depend on being good stewards of soil, water, livestock and wildlife."

The Cammack Ranch, owned by State Senator Gary Cammack and his wife, Amy, have a stewardship philosophy that reflects that dedication to South Dakota's natural resources. They raise beef cattle on 11,000 acres of grazing land in Meade County, where they have implemented rotational grazing practices, constructed windbreaks, and planted more than 30,000 trees. Their improvements have resulted in abundant wildlife, and healthy soil, grasslands and cattle.

"The Leopold Conservation Award continues to be the premier award focused on acknowledging the role of private landowners in protecting and preserving our natural resources. The South Dakota Cattlemen's Association is pleased to once again partner with the Sand County Foundation and South Dakota Grassland Coalition to highlight the great work of the Cammack family for their commitment to conservation," said Larry Stomprud, SDCA president.
