Scooper girls use two free throws to edge Pierre

Gary Matthews & Terry Anderson - December 9, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. - Sturgis used two free throws with under 10 seconds remaining to escape with a victory over Pierre Saturday night, 46-45.

The two teams traded leads most of the way, with neither team shooting very well.

Sturgis led 9-6 after one quarter and 17-15 at the half. Pierre led heading into the fourth quarter 29-27.

Loralee Stock was fouled after Pierre took a one-point lead on a 3-point shot by Kodi Severyn. Stock calmly walked to the line and knocked down two free throws to give Sturgis a one point lead.

Pierre got the ball down the floor and into the hands of Mack Rath, whose shot at the buzzer was off the mark.

Rath finished with 15 points to lead the Governors.

Stock led all scorers with 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Dismal shooting hurt both teams, but more-so for Pierre, who shot only 26-percent from the floor.

Sturgis knocked down 16 of 23 free throws. Pierre went 8 for 16 from the charity stripe.

Sturgis improves to 2-0 on the season. Pierre is 0-1.
