Scooper girls hang on to defeat Aberdeen Central

Gary Matthews & Terry Anderson - December 16, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. - Sturgis escaped with a 2-point win over Aberdeen Central in high school girls basketball Saturday afternoon.

Sturgis jumped out to a 16-6 run after one quarter, and led 30-22 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles would outscore the Scoopers 11-6 in the third, and take a two point late in the fourth.

Sturgis would regain the lead 44-42 with less than 10 seconds to play. After missed free throw by Loralee Stock, a jump ball would give the ball back to the Golden Eagles. A last second three point shot was off the mark by Jianna Gellhaus, and the Scoopers hung for the 44-42 win.

The Scoopers shot much better at the free throw line after shooting so poorly against Belle Fourche Tuesday night. The Scoopers were 13 of 16 from the charity stripe.

Stock led the way for the Scoopers with 16 points. Olivia Jolley added 12.

Emma Yeske led Aberdeen Central with 15.

Sturgis is now 3-1 and Aberdeen Central falls to 1-2.
