Historic rennovation part of downtown Sturgis Hotel

Gary Matthews - January 3, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. – Work is progressing on a new hotel in downtown Sturgis. Owner, Rod Bradley is a Sturgis native who wants to give back to the city that he says made him into the man he is today.

That’s why he is renovating the C&D Sales Building on Main Street into the new Hotel Sturgis. Bradley told KBHB Radio News during a recent tour that he’s excited about the hotel’s future.

"The energy around town and the interest and the people coming in to look at the progress is really exciting. This our sixth week of work and we are keeping our foot on the gas to make this happen"

Bradley says there is a lot of history in the building, and is working on incorporating that into the new hotel.

"We are trying to save as much as the tin ceiling as we cann and other historic stuff. It's extra work, but so worthwhile to try and preserve the history and make the decor fit with the history of Sturgis."

With two stories, the hotel will feature 22 rooms. The theme for the hotel will be the history of Sturgis. The building was originally built in 1892, but was renovated after a fire in 1906.

Bradley and his wife own the bar, The Oasis across the street from the hotel, and he wants to revitalize downtown Sturgis as much as he can. He says getting people in for an overnight stay on Main Street will benefit those businesses.

Bradley plans to keep as much of the original building as possible, and hopes to have the hotel open by May 2019.
