The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team put forth a great effort Saturday evening during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game against Western State Colorado University, but couldn't get the momentum they needed down the stretch as the Mountaineers fended off the Hardrockers, 60-49, in Gunnison, Colorado.

Both teams started strong and after a high-scoring first half, Western State led by six points, 27-21. The defensive effort was increased in the second quarter as the Mountaineers posted seven points while the 'Rockers posted six markers. The home squad went into the locker room with a seven point edge, 34-27.

SD Mines was able to regroup in the the third quarter and after trailing by as much as 11 points, chipped away at the deficit and got to within one points, 44-43, before the Mountaineers were able to quell their scoring surge.

SD Mines outscored Western, 16-12, in the third period and trailed by just three, 46-43. That would be as close as the visitors would get as Western State went on a 7-0 run that ate up a majority of the quarter.

The 'Rockers tried to get back in it, sending them to the foul line, but clutch free throws down the stretch decided the game.

The 'Rockers shot 34.6 percent in the game, making good on 18-52 attempts, including 7-20 from the three-point line and a 6-20 performance on free throws. They collected 22 rebounds, notched 18 assists, 10 steals and one block.
