RAPID CITY, SD – The 61st Black Hills Stock will welcome guests and visitors to the annual Ribbon Cutting and Press Social held every year to kick-off the fourth largest in-door, winter stock show in the region.

From volunteers, to supporters, sponsors and community members, the event that is open to the public, brings a lot of folks together for a chance to take a breather before the 10 day show gets underway January 25 – February 3, 2019, with all of the pressure that goes along with it.

The entire region benefits from the event that attracts hundreds of thousands of people from across the country (and a few foreign ones too) who mix and mingle during the myriad of events and competitions that are a part of stock show.  Surrounding communities to Rapid City also enjoy a boost in business as people take in the Black Hills as part of their stay during the event.

Historically, few organizations have as deep a tie to the stock show as the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce.  It was a group of forward thinking businessmen and ranchers who put their heads together in 1958 at a meeting in a local dry cleaners and came up with what would ultimately become South Dakota’s second largest tourism event.

“Our relationship with ranchers is historical and one that we like to celebrate with things like the stock show and rodeo that is becoming a part of Rapid City’s identity,” observes Rapid City Mayor,  Steve Allender.  “This is the second largest, single event in South Dakota, second only to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. There are tens of thousands of people spending an estimated $22 million in purchases related to stock show.  Those are real numbers.”

This year’s show features exciting events such as the Stockman’s Banquet and Ball, a two-day select horse sale, the BHSS Ranch Rodeo, purebred cattle shows and sales, live, concert entertainment, Broncs for Breakfast, All American Sheep Day, Western Art Shows, Auctioneer’s Bid Calling Contest, and a Boots & Beer Festival.

“Black Hills Stock Show continues to grow,” says BHSS General Manager Ron Jeffries.  “The Sutton family continues to add events to the rodeo side of activities.  We continue to add events to the entertainment side. And of course we work hard at maintaining the level of the quality of cattle and horses exhibited and sold here – the livestock that are the backbone of stock show.”

The Ribbon Cutting begins with a press conference with BHSS Board President, John Kerstens at 3:00p.m.  The Mayor’s Proclamation with Steve Allender follows at 3:20p.m. and the ribbon cutting takes place at 3:30p.m.

The Black Hills Stock Show kicks off January 25, 2019  and runs through Sunday, February 3, 2019 at the James Kjerstad Event Center and the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Rodeo Rapid City PRCA performances, Xtreme Bulls Tour, Xtreme Bronc Match, Free Style Bull Fights, High School Rodeo College Fair, 20x High School Rodeo Challenge, the Rodeo Zone, Kiddie Korral, Rodeo Champions  Autograph Sessions, Mounted Shooters, the Young Living Percheron Hitch, and Rodney Yost Horsemanship Clinics all get underway Friday, Jan. 26, 2019 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
