Scoopers, Cobblers split games Thursday night

Gary Matthews - January 11, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis and Rapid City Central engaged in a battle Thursday night in which the Cobblers came out on top 47-45.

The two teams traded the lead several times in the fourth quarter after Central lead by double-figures in the opening quarter.

Elijah Williams led Central with 12 points and Erik Keohane added 9.

The Scoopers were led by Ryan Garland’s 13 points.

Sturgis, down by three, had hoped to set up a for a three-pointer to try and tie the game with 5-seconds to play. Central, however, would foul Garland and send him to the free throw line. After making one to cut the lead the two, Garland intentionally missed the second hoping for a Scooper rebound. Central would rebound the ball, and ran the rest of the clock out.

In the girls game, Sturgis blew a 20-point lead in the third quarter to hang on and beat Central 48-45.

Central had a chance to tie it with seconds left, but a traveling call ended any hopes the Cobblers had for overtime.

Loralee Stock was unstoppable for the Scoopers – scoring 21 points and going a perfect 7 for 7 from the charity stripe. Gwen Simmons added a strong 13.

Juneau Jones paced Central with 20 points.
