RAPID CITY, SD – At the end of the day, it was Burch Rodeo’s  “Lunatic From Hell,” that gave top billing to J.J. Elshere, Hereford, SD, who won the PRCA Xtreme Saddle Bronc Challenge during the Rodeo Rapid City event in Rapid City.  It was made sweeter with the fact that Elshere had drawn the horse once before….and that time, the horse won.

The 39 year old Elshere  put together two strong rides to claim the Xtreme Bronc Match title capping off with a 93.5 ride aboard Burch Rodeo’s Bucking Horse Breeders Association Saddle Bronc of the Year, “Lunatic From Hell.”

In the short-go, Elshere went head to head with two world champions, Spencer Wright (Milford UT, 2014) and Zeke Thurston (Big Valley, Alberta, 2016). Wright, of the legendary Utah Wright brothers bronc riding family, claimed second money with a 90.5 ride, while Thurston turned in a  89.5 effort. Oklahoma’s Colt Gordon delivered a strong 84 point ride, tying with Nebraska’s Cort Sheer.

Elshere won the three-man championship short go with a ride that is the current top score of the PRCA circuit so far, in 2019.

South Dakota's designated state sport bucked out in fine form at the Black Hills Stock Show as Rodeo Rapid City hosted a full day of bronc events in the Barnett Arena, ending with the venerable PRCA Xtreme Bronc Match series.

Other bronc riders Jade Blackwell, Piedmont, SD,  who currently ranks 11th in world standings, drew a flat horse on his first  out, qualifying for a re-ride, before coming up empty in his second time out of the chute.  Ty Manke, Hermosa, SD, posted a 77 point ride on Burch Rodeo’s Margarita Maker.

Another announcement released on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, saw hat up in the air and cheers when the PRCA broke the news that the Xtreme Bronc Match Finals will be held in Rapid City, SD, in conjunction with the Central States Fair Range Rodeo in August.
