Graveside services for Delores Sexton, age 78, of rural Bison, SD, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at the Chance Cemetery south of Meadow, SD, with Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating.

Delores passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019, at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.

Delores J. Sexton was born January 22, 1941 in Bison, SD to Arthur and Alma Foxley.  Delores was the middle child of her family.  She had a younger sister named Lenora Ann and an older sister named Janice.  Growing up Delores and her family moved around frequently, but graduated from Lemmon High School in 1959.  Delores married Nolan Sexton whom she had met and known through family friends on December 13th 1959.  Nolan was enlisted in the navy at the time and they soon moved to California where she spent 2 years, while Nolan was deployed.  Coming from the small town of Lemmon it was quite the change for her.  While Nolan was out to sea, she worked at a clothing store and soon learned the ropes of the big city life.  They enjoyed their time in California making new friendships and Delores got to experience another side of life that she had not growing up in South Dakota.  Delores often talked about the luxurious pool outside their apartment complex that they got to enjoy.

Once Nolan returned from the Navy, they came back to South Dakota where they purchased their ranch south of Bison 25 miles and remained there ever since.  They had their first and only child Scot Sexton December 21, 1965.  From then on Delores ranched alongside her husband Nolan. They ran the ranch on Rabbit Creek as well as the ranch 20 miles south of Bison on Bixby Rd which was Nolan’s parents at one time.  Throughout the years they ran sheep and cattle.  Delores and her son Scot were often left in charge of running things while Nolan was trucking, providing another income for the family.

From the time Delores was young she loved to play the piano and sing.  Whenever she had spare time she would play.  She was diagnosed with arthritis at the age of 30, so in later years that slowed down her piano playing.  Her arthritis impacted her greatly, but it didn’t stop her from continuing to do what she loved or needed done.  She also loved cooking and would cook three meals a day, most from scratch whether she had to work outside with the men all day or not she would have something ready.  She made sure she fed her husband, son, and anyone else that happened to stop by that day a hardy, homemade meal and dessert.  Whether it was her family, friends, or neighbors they knew they’d never be disappointed when stopping at Delores’s house.

Delores also adored her five grandchildren that her son Scot gave her.  Brianna, Paden, Rio, Tava, and Lily loved spending time at grandma’s house.  She was very proud of her son Scot and grandchildren.  She made many birthday cakes over the years and hosted many family gatherings.  She was adored by many and played a huge role in her nieces, nephews, son’s, grandchildren’s, and so on lives.  She was not only a valued ranch wife, but a beloved mother, grandmother, mentor, friend, care taker and much more to many.  She enjoyed spending time with or visiting with friends when she could and was very grateful for their kindness.  They often got together a few times a year and she always looked forward to birthday parties or other gatherings they would have.

Until the day Delores passed she had cared for her husband Nolan, and was very devoted to him, making sure up until the last minute that he was well.  Nolan and Delores were together for 60 years and were glad to have the time together that they did.

Delores is survived by husband Nolan Sexton, son Scot Sexton, and grandchildren Brianna, Paden, Rio, Tava, & Lily Sexton. Sisters Janice Alden & Lenora Ann Marlow. Sister-In-Law Kathy Watt. Nieces & Nephews Shelia Smith, David Alden, Trixie Bauer, Mauri Cowan, Brian Blosmo, D’Lynn Valkenburgh along with other nieces, nephews & cousins.
