South Dakota's largest ag group opposes nomination

Jerry Oster, WNAX - February 27, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The South Dakota Farmers Union is opposing the nomination of Rodney Brown, a California bank executive, to the Farm Credit Administration Board. SDFU President Doug Sombke says they’re asking the Senate Ag Committee to oppose Brown for that position.

“He’s been on the board of the American Banker’s Association that has opposed this system for several years,” said Sombke.  “And they also attack the system in the way they count beginning farmers and ranchers – it’s not correct.”

He continued, “The Farm Credit Service Administration might not be a perfect system but I can tell you this – it’s a lifeline to many beginning farmers and ranchers and anyone who is struggling out here.”

He says if Brown’s nomination is approved, it will just add to the economic stress farmers are experiencing now.

“I really don’t like the fact that this man has been nominated to a system he despises so much,” said Sombke.  “I think our farmers and ranchers deserve better.”

He added,  “And in a time when they are really stressed to begin with, they don’t need to be worrying about whether their system is going to change on them or not.”

Sombke says many farmers and ranchers depend upon the Farm Credit System as a lifeline to their financial needs.

“Anybody who can remember the 1980’s – we’re at the verge, we are right at the door,” said Sombke.  “And if people like this are going to be in charge, we will not only see challenges like we saw then, but we will see more problems with the Farm Credit Service Association.  We will see large banks using their strength and power against farmers and ranchers. That’s what we have to stop.”

Sombke is calling on his group’s members and all farmers and ranchers to contact members of the Senate Agriculture Committee to urge them to vote down the nomination nomination.
