Scoopers lose SoDak 16 game to Mitchell

Scooper girls see season come to an end with SoDak 16 loss to Mitchell

Gary Matthews & Terry Anderson - March 1, 2019

MITCHELL, S.D. - The Sturgis Scooper girls basketball team dropped a 60-35 contest to Mitchell in the SoDak 16 Friday night at the Corn Palace.

Mitchell jumped on top of Sturgis early, leading 19-8 after the first quarter. Jordyn Cranny hit a 3-pointer and free throws by Payton Morgan and Tess Limberg helped Mitchell get off a great start.

The start was not so great for the Scoopers, who saw both Olivia Jolley and Loralee Stock get into foul trouble early.

Sturgis settled things down in the second quarter, but didn't gain much ground on Mitchell as they led 28-18 at halftime.

Mitchell would put the game away in the third, as they outscored Sturgis 16-11 to take a 44-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

Sturgis couldn't get the shots to fall, and eventually, Stock and Jolley fouled out.

The fouls along with poor shooting doomed the Scoopers as Mitchell cruised to a 60-35 win to earn a trip to the Girls Class AA State Basketball Tournament.

Payton Morgan led Mitchell with 17 points. Limberg and Mackenzie Miller each added 13 for the Kernels.

The Scoopers had no players in double-figures -- led by Stock's 9 points. Jolley added 8.

Sturgis shot just 30-percent from the floor, and was 0 for 15 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Mitchell shot 46-percent from the floor and was 3 for 7 from 3-point land.

The Scooper girls finish the season with a record of 13-8.
