- March 31, 2019

Clara Fern was born to Robert and Lucille Fagering on July 17, 1934, in Sturgis, the first of what began their family of three beautiful children.  But as history will tell you, this young individual was well on her way as an independent thinker.  Not comfortable with her given name, Clara, she chose to change it to Peggy.  Well go girl, as we would say today.  She was born in Sturgis, raised in Whitewood, and attended schools in Spearfish and Sturgis.

Growing up, she found interests in crocheting, quilting, and sewing, something she would carry on through her entire life, giving gifts of her incredible talent to so many until her Parkinson’s got too bad.  That independent girl didn't always roll solo.  She found her best friend for life, in the most obvious place ever, her sister, Frances.  They remained incredibly close best friends until 2014, when Frances was called home.  So again, Peggy continued, independent.

In her early 20’s, she met Lawrence E. Eilert, married happily, and proceeded to have 7 children.  Sadly, as it came to pass, life had different plans for her.  She was widowed at the young age of 34.  As her early independent years would dictate, she never remarried, and bravely chose to raise their children on her own.  She opened a daycare so she could support her children and be able to stay home.  She was also a Foster Grandparent after she retired, which she thoroughly enjoyed.  Never a surprise for someone with a big family, and that amazing, giving heart.  Although she had to go into the nursing home for the last two years, she tried to make the best of it.  She loved coloring club the best.  She made many friends and was loved by everyone.

Peggy, 84, Sturgis, died Friday, March 29, 2019, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.

With her loving, giving heart, she leaves behind quite a legacy of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, even the four-legged ones.  She is survived by five children, Daryl (Brenda), Sherry (Marvin), Mike (Roxanne), Bret (Julie), and Laurie (Jeff); 21 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter due in July; 3 great-granddogs; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister; one brother; two sons, Robert and Dean; and two granddaughters, Alishia and Sarah.

As our heart breaks with the loss of Peggy, we thank our dear Lord for the amazing gift of her, and that with the love of God all she created and loved.  She has been called home, ending her undue suffering, joining our beloved Savior.  And as happy as we are for that, we will still continue to love, miss, and look for her everywhere.  We will have to remind ourselves she is always with us, finding her in our own hearts, and know she is again, the vibrant, strong-willed, beautiful girl, that had always been there.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 2, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Keith McGraw officiating.  Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
