SDSU Extension Sends 4-H Members to National 4-H Conference

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota 4-H members attended the National 4-H Conference held at the National 4-H Conference Center; in Chevy Chase, Md., April 5 – April 11, 2019.

“National 4-H Conference for me was more than just a trip. It was an experience to make friendship to last a lifetime, learn more about my nation’s capital, and dig deeper into who I really want to be,” said Hannah Frost, a Minnehaha County 4-H member. “National 4-H Conference changed my view of the world.”

Frost was joined by 4-H members Nicole Hauck, Clay County and Hailie Stuck, Spink County. Amanda Stade, SDSU Extension State 4-H Events Management Coordinator and Julie Fallan, Clay County 4-H Volunteer served as chaperones.

During the conference 4-H members had the opportunity to tour D.C., network with members from across the U.S., attend workshops town hall discussions and learn from 4-H Alumni. Members also had the opportunity to discuss relevant issues impacting their communities during roundtable discussions. South Dakota youth participated in the following roundtable discussions:
• Nicole Hauck, Clay County: School Safety - U.S. Department of Education
• Hannah Frost, Minnehaha County: Healthy Relationships – U.S. Department of Health and Human
• Hailie Stuck, Spink County: Mental Health; U.S. Department of Health and Human
The trip was sponsored and funded by the 4-H Livestock Industry Trust Fund.

National 4-H Conference
The National 4-H Conference is a premier professional and leadership development event for 4-H members, ages 15 to 19, across the U.S. and its territories.

The conference is administered by the National 4-H Headquarters of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Held annually, except for several years during World War II, the camp’s mission is to assist in the development of the next generation’s leaders. Delegates attend training workshops, become acquainted with government and have the opportunity to meet with state leaders.
