Governor lifts travel restrictions

SD Ag Connection - May 5, 2019

PIERRE, SD - Governor Kristi Noem has responded to unseasonably cold and wet weather and soil conditions by lifting South Dakota's night-time travel restriction for some agricultural machinery.

Her executive order says planters and applicators up to 12 feet wide can use state highways after dark.

They need to be marked by flashing lights visible to other motorists at 500 feet and state permits must be in the vehicles.

The order runs through June 15 unless conditions improve. It doesn't apply to South Dakota's two interstate highways.

"Planting, fertilizer, and agricultural chemical application has been delayed and now requires round-the-clock operation in order to lessen the impending impact of farmers not getting in the field in adequate time for planting and crop emergence," the order said.
