Lloyd Allen Rogers

Lloyd Allen Rogers

Lloyd Allen Rogers

- May 6, 2019

Lloyd was born February 14, 1924, to Jesse and Viva (McGraw) Rogers and raised in Fairpoint, SD.

He was united in marriage to Josephine Anna Kari in Drew, SD, in 1942, and they lived in Bixby in their early years together.  Later, they made their home near Deadwood, Belle Fourche, and Black Hawk.  They were blessed with four children, Wyona “Penny” Schablitsky, Robin Hanson, Calvin Rogers, and Barney, who died as an infant.

Lloyd served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an artillery specialist.  Later, he would break horses for the Fort Meade Cavalry.  Lloyd wore many hats in his life, including that of a rancher, a truck driver, working with American Colloid, owner of the Ranger Bar in Deadwood for a time, and also working in construction, owning his own excavation company.  Later in life, he and Josephine trucked together, traveling across the United States and Canada, sharing many cherished memories of people and places.

Lloyd was a kindhearted man and friend to everyone he met.  Although he kept many kinds of animals through the years, he always favored horses.  He and Josephine won a Pony Express race, riding five different horses from Mount Rushmore to Deadwood in the late ‘60s.  He was still trying to break an Arabian at 87 years of age.  After he retired, one of his favorite pastimes was reading, mostly Westerns and the Bible, which he read from front to back at least four times in the last five years.  He especially loved a good game of cribbage with his special friends at Heritage Acres in Sturgis, and with his dear friend, Ralph Dienstel, from Rapid City.  He also loved to watch PBR.

He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be greatly missed.

Lloyd Allen Rogers, 95, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at his home in Sturgis.

He is survived by his daughter, Robin; son, Calvin; a sister, Carolyn (Doug) Stubstad; grandsons, Ricky (Cathy) Schablitsky, Wade (Charlene) Schablitsky, Chad (Traci) Hanson, and Matthew Rogers; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews who all cherished Lloyd as their favorite uncle.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo; his children, Penny and Barney; and sisters, Ruby Scovel, Opal Winkler, Luverne Kari, and Inez Freis.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2019, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Father Timothy Castor officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
