- May 21, 2019

Connie Lou Komes was born August 2, 1947, to Walter L. and Helen (Dutton) Wenzel of rural Bixby, SD.  Her first years were on ranches in Perkins County, and in 1954, her family purchased and moved to a ranch in Enning, SD.  She attended Enning and Sunnyslope Schools through the 8th grade and graduated from Sturgis High School in 1965.  She married William Komes in 1968, and to this union two sons, Troy and Scott, were born.  They later divorced.

She lived in Sturgis, Pierre, Rapid City, Black Hawk, Belle Fourche, and Yuma, AZ, over the years.  While living at home on the ranch in Enning, she worked at the Enning Store.  She worked at the Fort Pierre Livestock Market in Fort Pierre after high school, and later worked at the middle school in Pierre.  In Rapid City, she worked at Boyd’s Drug Mart and Prairie Edge.  She worked at a laundry facility and was a tour bus guide, and did some auto transport driving, moving cars in the Yuma, AZ, area.

On August 20, 2005, she married Paul Horsey and they traveled the United States with their car hauler.  They visited 46 of the lower 48 states and she loved the scenes and had pictures to show all the places they visited.  Her husband, Paul, passed away suddenly on a trip across Texas in 2006.  She continued to live in Yuma for several years and then moved back to the Black Hills to be close to family, living first in Belle Fourche and then Sturgis.

Spending time with her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson were some of her most wonderful times.  She and Kody made many memories cruising through the hills in her Mustang Convertible with the top down.

She loved to shop at secondhand stores and she and friend, Vikki Parsons, spent many hours shopping at their favorite place . . . The Boy’s Club Thrift Store in Rapid City.  She also loved to go to Deadwood on Senior Day with friends, Carol and Wayne Oedekoven.

She was always looking for a bargain and loved listening to the Eagle Radio Station and calling in for a chance to win free tickets to special events.  She was very lucky and received tickets for numerous events.  She had just joined the Extension Homemakers Club and was excited to start participating in activities.

Connie, 71, died Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.

She is survived by her son, Scott (Heidi) Komes, and grandson, Kody of Union Center, SD; brother, Terry (Lana) Wenzel of Belle Fourche; sisters, Donna (Jim) Bares of Sturgis, and Cathy (John) Timmons of White Owl; one aunt, Dorothy French of Sturgis; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter L. and Helen Wenzel; first husband, William Komes; son, Troy Komes; and husband, Paul Horsey.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, May 27, 2019, at the Sturgis Senior Center.  Inurnment will follow at 5:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
