Greater Sturgis Foundation makes donation to Black Hills Trails organization

News Staff - June 27, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. - The Greater Sturgis Foundation has made a $50,000 donation to Black Hills Trails/Sturgis Zone, allowing for 16 miles of completed trails near Sturgis.

“This grant award is an amazing gift from the Greater Sturgis Foundation and will really further our vision to connect communities in the Black Hills,” said Kevin Forrester of Black Hills Trails. Forrester has put countless hours into the project and noted that this donation will “allow us to finally finish the Sturgis system after thousands of hours of volunteer labor. We will look forward to figuring out maintenance and working with the forest service into the coming future.”

Greater Sturgis Foundation Board Member, Rosemary Roth, said the foundation was “thrilled to be part of such a wonderful opportunity in Sturgis.” When asked why Black Hills Trails was selected to receive $50,000, she referenced the Greater Sturgis Foundation’s mission statement, and it was a clear fit, “Part of the Greater Sturgis Foundation’s goal is to create a better community for all residents. Our ultimate objective with this project is to encourage and provide a means for people to be more healthy and active while enjoying our beautiful Black Hills.”

Roth also noted that Black Hills Trails truly benefits everyone in the community, “These trails allow individuals of every age group, skill level, and income level to hike, run, bike, and horseback, with the added benefit of getting healthier both physically and mentally.

The check presentation was held Wednesday evening at Harley-Davidson Rally Point in Sturgis as a part of Music on Main Mountain Bike Race Series.

The Greater Sturgis Foundation is a tax-exempt public organization created to attract and distribute charitable funds for the benefit of the Greater Sturgis Area. These taxdeductible funds are invested in The South Dakota Community Foundation, which is a permanent endowment fund. Accordingly, only a percentage of the earnings from the donated funds are distributed to charitable and nonprofit organizations, never the principal. This plan enables donors of moderate means to make a larger impact by pooling these resources. Therefore, donations live on for generations for all who call the Sturgis Area home.

Since 1988 various community organizations have received well over $400,000 from this fund.
