Edna Christine Cowan

- June 28, 2019

Edna Christine Cowan (nee Jensen), formerly of Lead and Spearfish, passed away June 13, 2019 in Boise, Idaho. She was 101.

Edna was born on a ranch near Whitewood to Pete and Katrina Jensen February 5, 1918. She attended a one-room school through 8th grade. After graduation from Whitewood High School, she married Charles L. Cowan of Lead in 1936. In Lead, Edna and Chuck raised six children - Janet, Michael, Judy (Watson), Joan (Lee), Linda (Eliopulos), and Eric.

Edna’s family was her main focus, but she found time to take part in many community activities. She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church, later known as Shepherd of the Hills. She was well known for the many hundreds of rosettes she made for the annual lutefisk dinner. She worked at the J&E Store in Lead and later Virginia’s dress shop in Deadwood.

She moved to Spearfish in 1983 after Homestake purchased her home during the expansion of the Open Cut. There she was active in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, serving as treasurer and other duties.

She enjoyed Spearfish Canyon and the Latchstring Inn, driving through the Black Hills, reading, music, playing cribbage with family, sewing and cross stitch.

In 2001, Edna moved to Boise, Idaho to be near her children.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband Chuck, her daughter Judy, her brother Alvin Jensen, granddaughter Sandy Yakel, and sons-in-law Dick Watson and David Lee. She is survived by her five remaining children, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Shepherd of the Hills at 11 am July 5, followed by a luncheon at the church. Interment will be at Mountain Lawn Cemetery near Lead.
