Nyla Ghering, age 81, of Chehalis, Washington, formerly of Wall, South Dakota, died on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Providence Centralia in Washington.

Interment will follow at the Wall Cemetery.

Nyla Kay Ghering was born March 20, 1937, in DeSmet, South Dakota, to Evelyn Ruth (Revel) and Herman Arthur Lewis Jacob. She grew up in the Shelton area, where her father worked in the Bremerton Shipyards. She attended elementary school there and most enjoyed twirling her baton and playing the clarinet, with her school band. Nyla graduated from High School in DeSmet in 1955.

Nyla was united in marriage to Roger Lewis Johnson, on July 1, 1955, in DeSmet. To this union was born six children. She was later united in marriage to Raymond Ghering, on November 20, 1973, in Wall, South Dakota. To this union was born a son. Nyla lived nearly all her adult life in South Dakota, working as a restaurant cook/chef at the Cactus Café many of those years, and then for the Wall Drug Store. Her last place of employment was with Gold Diggers Jewelry Store, working as their manager. She loved retail, jewelry and most of all, people. During her spare time, while in Wall, Nyla was a volunteer with the Wall Ambulance Department, as an EMT, for nearly ten years. She was very proud of this accomplishment, as she began this adventure at the age of 60 and continued until her family moved her to Rapid City, South dakota, to be near them. In October of 2009, Nyla’s daughters, Debra and Dawn, moved her to Chehalis, Washington, where she resided until her passing away. Nyla loved doing her crafts when she had time for herself, and was always cooking for someone, not ever wanting anyone to go hungry. She was always doing for others, even in her later years, while living at the Vintage Apartments, in Chehalis. While at the Vintage, she was a “Night Time Watch Angel”, who went around in the evenings, to check on people and to make sure the building doors were locked and secured for the night. Nyla also helped with the food pantry within her building, as well as putting together food boxes for residents, when food was delivered monthly, from the local food bank. It was very fitting that she enjoyed doing this for her friends at the Vintage. She would attend the pot luck events, and was most noted for her “baked beans”, which she would make and always bring.

Nyla leaves behind six of her seven children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren which include: daughter, Debra (Clifford) Welsh of Centralia, WA; four grandchildren; Jason (Jennifer) Welsh and great-granddaughter Carley, Heather (Michael) Madden and great-grand twins, Jack and Ruth, Haylee (Tyler) Bruce and great-granddaughters Pepper and Penny, and Walter Tyson Welsh; son, Richard (Tracy Feldman) Johnson of Box Elder, South Dakota; two grandchildren; Angela (Dale) Muller and great-grandchildren Alyssa, Taynnen, Kakaeyla, Shauna, and Gabriella; two step-grandchildren of Dale’s (Zoe and Xavier), Roger Johnson with great-grandson Cole and step-granddaughter, Deika Seely; daughter, Dawn Johnson of Kingsburg, California; three grandsons Seth Johnson and great-grand-daughter, Kaila and step-great grandson, Brennan, Zachery (Rachel) Lyons and Casey Lyons; son, Derwin Johnson of Mesa, Arizona; four grandchildren Amber (Dylon) Hubert and great-grand-daughter Olivia, Trent (Jenae) Johnson and twin grandsons, Jacob and Quinton Johnson; daughter, Denise (Cory) Kranhold of Sisseton, South Dakota; three grandchildren Katlyn (Ross) Torgerson and great-grandson Deklah, Ethan Kranhold and Andrew Kranhold; son, David (Tiffany) Ghering of Box Elder, South Dakota; three grandchildren; Noah Ghering, Emma Ghering and Elias Ghering; her sister, Lynda (Ralph) Broderson of DeSmet, South Dakota, and her brother, Paul (Brenda) Jacob of Sheridan, Wyoming; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her second husband, Raymond Ghering, Nyla was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Johnson, who has one son.

Nyla died on February 21, 2019, at Providence Centralia, at the age of 81, with loving people by her side.

Visitation in Washington state took place on February 28th, for the families who reside in WA and OR, at the Sticklin Funeral Chapel, in Centralia, Washington. A Vigil Rosary was said in the chapel at the Vintage, in Chehalis on March 4, 2019, with a reception for her friends at the Vintage.

In lieu of flowers, we thank you in advance for sending any Memorial Donations for Nyla Kaye Ghering to the Wall Ambulance Department, 210-2nd Ave, Wall, SD, 57790, where she volunteered as an EMT. To her EMT family, she loved you all and was very proud to serve her community, with each of you.
