LaVerne Everett Garner

- July 11, 2019

LaVerne Everett Garner was born in Rapid City, SD, on June 6, 1971, to Jacque (Freeland) and Joe Garner.  Vern was raised on the family farm at Union Center, SD, with his sister, Jody (1973).  Vern loved shooting from a young age and made sure Jody knew how to keep up with him.  Along with shooting, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle to the neighbors, which he had perfected to ensure he arrived at each one at their lunch time.  Vern attended kindergarten through 8th grade at Union Center School.  Vern started high school in Newell, SD, before the family moved to Sturgis in 1987.

On August 31, 1991, Vern married Connie Winkleblack in Sturgis, SD.  Vern and Connie resided in Sturgis and Vern worked at Little River Sawmill in Piedmont.  In November of 1992, they had a son, Shane William Garner.  In May of 1993, they moved west of Newell, SD, due to the sawmill in Piedmont closing.  Vern then worked for Butte County Highway Department.  In June of 1994, they bought a place in Newell.  In April of 1997, they were blessed with twin daughters, Amber Kay and Autumn Jean.

In 1998, he quit working for Butte County and took the position of City Foreman for the City of Newell.  In 2000, they moved to Wright, WY, for about a year and then moved back to Newell.  He then worked for Bruce Bowen and Co. and then Jamison International before going to work for Culver Trucking, hauling gravel in the oil fields in North Dakota.

He then went to work for Gunderson Trucking out of Buffalo, SD, hauling livestock, hay, and whatever else needed hauled.  His favorite to haul was buffalo, which he loved more than cattle.  Vern met a lot of people and made a lot of friends while being in the trucking world.  He was often requested by ranchers because of the care he took while hauling the livestock.

LaVerne, 48, passed away on July 9, 2019, in Bowdle, SD.
