Viola Chiller

- July 24, 2019

Viola Chiller, 88, Sturgis, died Sunday, July 21, 2019, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Viola was born June 13, 1931, in Deadwood, SD, to Raymond and Ethel (Baughman) Coppo.  She graduated from Vale High School, and married Eugene Chiller on November 5, 1950, in Sturgis, SD.  They farmed in the Vale area until she finally sold in October of 2014 and she then moved to Sturgis.

She loved to travel, giving her the idea to start a travel agency in Sturgis, which she owned and operated for many years.  Viola was very active in the square-dancing community in the northern hills, she was a caller, having her certificate and many awards.  She loved music and dancing of all kinds.  Viola was even one of the first ladies to own a motorcycle, buying an Indian Scout when she was just 18 and learning to ride from Pappy Hoel and participating in some of the Jack Pine Gypsy rides.

Viola is survived by her son, Ian Chiller, Sturgis; grandson, Ty Chiller and his girlfriend, Katie Broderson, Vale; her great-granddaughter, Aaliyah, Vale; step-granddaughter, Jessica Flaigg; and numerous other step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; and grandson, Christopher Flaigg.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.  Burial will follow at the Vale Cemetery.
