Darwin Dean Eckhart, 78, Lead, SD passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on August 2nd 2019.

Darwin was born to Emma and Ellsworth Eckhart on June 19th 1941 in Deadwood SD. He attended Lead high school, while in high school he went to work at Standard station in Deadwood. Immediately following high school, he briefly worked at Trojan mine with his father giving tours of the mine. In 1960 he went to work at Wheelers Lumber in Whitewood, SD. After 44 years of service he retired in June of 2004. On January 7, 1961 he married the love of his life Carole Bergstrom. Carole and Darwin attended grade school together. They lived their life together in Nevada Gulch where they had two children Brenda and LeRoy. Darwin enjoyed spending time with his family 4-wheeling, Camping, gambling at the Gold Dust, along with feeding and watching the birds. Darwin always took the extra time to play with his kids and grandkids. Each child had their own special nickname that Darwin created. These memories will forever be cherished. After retirement he was able to spend even more time doing the things he loved. Darwin was a jack of all trades.

Darwin is preceded in death by his parents Ellsworth and Emma along with his siblings Gary, Virginia, Darlene and Kay. Survived by his wife Carole, sister Eleanor, children Brenda (Jerry) and LeRoy (Debbie), grandchildren; Billie Jo Inhofer (Jared), Tammy Jo McGuckin (Mike), Josh Ryan and Trinity Eckhart (Linsey), Jami Delbridge, Michelle Sund-Enninga, Nicole Clendening along with numerous, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30am on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead, SD. A private family inurnment will take place in Mountain Lawn Cemetery south of Lead.
