Thousands of Pony cars fill the streets of Sturgis for annual rally

News Staff - August 28, 2019

STURGIS, SD – There are few things as iconic as the Ford Mustang. The breakout car of the 60’s was introduced in 1964, making it’s first appearance in the James Bond movie “Goldfinger. The 1965 Mustang was the automaker’s most successful launch since the Model A.

It’s that kind of legacy that’s on display during the 13th Sturgis Mustang Rally underway now through September 1. The week-long rally is packed with racing, cruises, a car show and fun events. Racing events include autocross, drag racing, barrel racing and rodeo.

Unofficially, upwards of 1,000 cars made the pilgrimage to western South Dakota to partake in an event that showcases Mustang’s from all generations.

The annual Show and Shine Competition on Sturgis Main Street, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1

Other events during the Sturgis Mustang Rally include the annual Military & Veteran’s Tribute Run with stops at Fort Meade VA Medical Center and Black Hills National Cemetery, the Mustang Rodeo at the ThunderDome and the Black Hills Poker Run.

Along with two days of Autocross Driving School at The Thunderdome east of Sturgis, there will be Auto Cross Competition at the ThunderDome on Friday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Sept. 1. In addition,  Mustang Drag Racing gets underway at Sturgis Dragway on Saturday.

Of all the car events that take place in and around Sturgis every year, the annual Sturgis Mustang Rally held over Labor Day weekend is the biggest of them all.
