Fly-In and Job Fair coming to Belle Fourche

News Staff - September 19, 2019

BELLE FOURCHE, SD – A unique approach to a job fair includes a fly-in to encourage more interest in related fields in aviation, says volunteer Edna McDermott of the Belle Fourche Flight Center Fly-In and Job Fair set for September 21 at the Belle Fourche airport.

“We thought a fly-in – while focusing on careers in aviation – also is a way to get people thinking about careers involving science, math, engineering and emerging technologies,” says McDermott, who adds, “It is also an opportunity for those who are considering changing careers.  As our economy changes, people are interested in retraining.”

The event starts with a free breakfast at 7a.m. and continues throughout the day.  Local and regional pilots, flying a variety of airplane types and models, from Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana will fly in to Belle Fourche and be available to talk with the attendees about their airplanes, how they became interested in flying and how they were trained. A limited number of first-time flyer flights will be offered free of charge. Attendees will also have the opportunity to fly a virtual reality flight simulator.

Along with aviation, a full offering of career related opportunities is available at the Job Fair.  “At the same time as the coal mines in Wyoming are laying off employees, local employers and industries are hiring,” says McDermott.  “A job fair seemed logical,” she continued, “because it offers the opportunity to match people looking for a job with local employers, expand employment horizons for individuals, including those currently enrolled in school, and to explore a career or career change.”

The day also includes health and wellness sessions.  According to McDermott, research show that poor health negatively impacts a person’s ability to find and retain employment. "Education and training that leads to well-paid employment is just one more ‘good choice’ that leads to a better, healthier life," says McDermott.

Universities, technical institutes, local and regional businesses will be represented at the Job Fair. For more information about the Fly-In and Job Fair, see the Belle Fourche Flight Center on Facebook.
