BHSU Football falls to Adams State

BHSU Athletics - September 21, 2019

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University football team outscored Adams State University in the second half, but fell, 45-31, on Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (0-3, 0-3 RMAC) opened with a three-and-out, giving the Grizzlies (2-1, 2-1 RMAC) good field position. ASU took advantage of the short field and Tariq Bitson caught an 18-yard touchdown to put the visitors up, 7-0.

A turnover on BHSU's ensuing possession once again gave Adams State a short field, and the Grizzlies scored eight plays later to lead, 14-0. ASU would score on their next two possessions as well, and led, 28-0, at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, ASU had the ball in their own territory. Quarterback John Buksa had his pass intercepted by Keyshawn Farmer who ran it back 35 yards for a touchdown. It was the first defensive score this season for the Yellow Jackets. On the Grizzlies' next possession, they got the ball down to the red zone, however, the BHSU defense made a stop, forcing a field goal just before the half. ASU led BHSU, 31-7, entering the break.

Neither team was able to get the ball moving on their first drives of the second half. However, Jacob Parks was able to pin the Grizzlies deep with a punt that was downed at the three-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Bailey Rosenstrauch got to Buksa in the end zone, recording a safety for the Yellow Jackets. After receiving the free kick, the Green and Gold kept the momentum, driving 54 yards in nine plays. The possession was capped off by a seven-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Tyler Hammons, narrowing the deficit to 31-16.

The Grizzlies scored again to increase the lead to 38-16, with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter.

Black Hills State got the ball back with 8:45 to play in the game. After getting a first down on a penalty, Hammons found Kielar Harpham down the field. The Yellow Jackets' leading receiver weaved his way down the field, dodging tacklers, and eventually finding the end zone.

The two teams traded turnovers in their next possessions, before ASU took advantage of another short field and scored, taking a 45-24 lead. The Yellow Jackets responded with a touchdown of their own, this time on a 12-yard reception by Harpham. The Green and Gold trailed, 45-31, however, time ran short, and the visitors claimed the RMAC victory.

Tyler Hammons threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Harpham led all receivers with 113 yards and scored two TDs. Tyler Keys and Jawaun Hardy each had their first career catches in the game. Defensively, Kyle Kettlehut led the Green and Gold with 19 tackles and a forced fumble. Bailey Rosenstrauch had 15 tackles, and Cole Miller had 12.

For the Grizzlies, Buksa threw for 131 yards and three touchdowns. Jamarcus Federick rushed for 155 yards and two scores, while Duson Sproles rushed for 138 yards.
